Texas Gun-Slinger coming to the Hill

After speaking with Mauro, he seems eager to get his career at WKU underway. QB James Mauro 6'7'' 215 from Texas told me he felt very comfortable being on the hill and with the coaching staff as they recruited his brother in 2009 recruit to Stanford Josh Mauro DE, he also said "he like the feel of WKU when he stepped on campus".

One of the first questions I asked Mauro was, " Who is the most influential person is your life and why?" He responded, "My mom... She does a great job of taking care of us and she works hard". Mauro went on to say that he is not sure if he is going to red shirt or not his freshman year but there is definitely competition for the starting QB position and he is going to have to work hard for the top spot. His recruiting was handled by Coach White.  Mauro is still unsure of what he wants to major in but already has plans on what he is going to work on while making the transition from high school to college football.

Strengths: His ability to see the field and make decisions are some of his strengths he told me.
Weaknesses: He said he wanted to work on his foot speed and overall strength before stepping onto the hill.

Mauro is currently playing basketball for his high school.

Word on the Hill

Word on the hill is that OL Delryn Wilson 6'3'' 297 OL from Tampa FL signed this weekend when he took his visit to WKU.

Has Xavier Hemingway verballed to WKU?

There are reports out that WKU is heavily involved in the recruiting of Georgia O-lineman Xavier Hemingway. Xavier is a 6' 5" 255 lb lineman from Mceachern HS in Powder Springs which is another hotbed for HS Football Recruiting.

Xavier is a 3* recruit with offers from UCONN, FIU, Louisville, Maryland, Memphis, MTSU, USF, So. Miss, Tulane, and Syracuse.

How does WKU Stand with Bubba?

With less than 2 weeks left, WKU could be primed to make some serious noise in the 2011 recruiting class. One of the players that they seemingly want is Christian County WR Bubba Tandy. Bubba has raised his stock significantly this past season as both a WR and as a return man (he has had multiple returns for TDs this past season in multiple games). In one game, he scored 4 TDs.

In addition to WKU, Bubba has offers from Ark St, Marshall, Miami (OH), MTSU and Toledo. At one time, Tandy held a conditional offer from UK. The 6' 1" WR has been clocked at 4.45 in the 40 yard and is rated a high 3* by Rivals.

For WKU to take the next step forward on the field, they must begin to get committments from players like Tandy.

Jon Dowling to WKU

As most of the Big Red Faithful are aware, Jon Dowling transferred to WKU recently. Jon was ranked the #16 Safety in the 2010 recruiting class and played this past season for the Florida Gators. The 6'3" transfer saw limited action this past season and was unhappy with his status on the team and announced his decision during the holidays.

Dowling is from Southeast HS in Bradenton Florida which is a hotbed for DIV I football talent. It is also an area that the current staff has been very busy recruiting and has previous ties.

Dowling will add speed, ball skills and size to the team. Before committing to Florida, he had offers from Alabama, FSU, Notre Dame, UGA, THE U, and South Carolina.

WKU looks to wind up Recruiting for 2011 class

WKU looks to wind up recruiting on a positive note. Currently the 2011 recruiting class has 6 -3 star recruits with most of them being out of state talent. The class has a good cross section of talent and is looking to add talent to both the O-line and D-line. The coaching staff will no doubt save a couple of rides at the last moment to catch any recruits which may be left out in the cold or have cold feet and decide for WKU at the last moment.

Whatever happens, there is no dount that the talent base in both terms of depth and playmaking ability has significantly increased this off-season.

WR Boe Brand to WKU

WR, Boe Brand from Southeast HS in Bradenton Fl has verballed to WKU. Boe is a 3 Star recruit with offers from Bowling Green, Illinois, FIU, Rutgers, USF, UCF, and Kent State. The 6'0" WR runs a 4.45 in the 40 yard and was recruited by Raymond Woodie. Brand is a surprise verbal, as he was expected to stay instate and play at a Florida school. Brand had 47 receptions for over 800 yards and 7 TDs.

Boe increases the presence of WKU coaching staff in Florida and the meteoric rise of the team to recruit the state for DIV I talent.

Neville Hewitt

After talking with the 2011 WKU Safety recruit

Neville Hewitt
6 2' 205   40yrd dash @ 4.5 (last time he ran said Hewitt)
Rivals ranking 55th at his postition and 73rd in the state
Finished high school with 18 interceptions and 254 tackles

He was recruited by Coach White. Hewitt also went on to say he wanted to major in Sports Management so that he could "one day become my own agent or have something to do with sports after college". Hewitt also said, he was not not planning to redshirt his freshman year.
After asking Hewitt what his strengths and weaknesses this is what he had to say

Strengths: Hewitt said, " I'm a hard hitter with good hands and a good open field tackler."
Weaknesses: He also went on to say, he has a bad tendency of jumping the short route to early.

Before coming onto campus (if he were to sign with WKU) Mr. Hewitt said he wants to work on his strength and speed but does not feel like he needs to gain weight.

Now with all of that said is WKU still in the running for recruiting Neville Hewitt??
He simply said  "... wku is still in the running."

Word on the Hill

WKU is preparing for one of the most important parts of the football season... Finalizing Recruiting/National Signing Day. Things are definately looking up for the Toppers in this aspect. What some may not realize as an important part of recruitment is the chemistry and some of our players are working on getting to know some of the recruits and all the players are back on the Hill getting ready for workouts and classes to start next week.

Looking at only two weeks left how is WKU stacking up against not only the Sun Belt Conference and the MAC but other conferences as well?
